Marriage Growth MUST Be Intentional!

I am bucking the teaching here! Most pastors use that diagram to show that if a husband and wife both are growing towards God, they are also growing towards each other.

That is what the enemy wants Christian couples to believe because its actually false. Married couples can grow towards God & still not grow towards each other.

Here is the reason, marriage growth is intentional! If you are intentional with God but not with your marriage then yes you may grow closer to God but you won’t be growing closer to your spouse. I have seen this happen so much.

I used to be one of those people that would use that diagram but I realize now that its not the full story and that people can get closer to God without coming together.

I am NOT saying not to get closer to God because the closer we get to him, the more our heart becomes pure. What I am saying is that marriage growth is intentional. You cant just grow towards God and expect your marriage to come with it. Marriage doesn’t work like that.

Think about it, do you do personal growth things each day outside of your Christian walk? If you do then why? Because you know that your personal growth is still an important ingredient to your whole-being living while you are growing spiritually.

In the same way, marriage growth is important. In fact I believe it is so important that if you are doing 1 hour a day in personal growth, you should also do 1 hour a day in marriage growth things.

Here is why, personal growth teaches you how to be happy alone while marriage growth teaches you how to be happy together. Do you see what can happen if all you do is personal growth? You become so independent that marriage no longer even matters to you.

When you combine both personal growth to keep you in check and marriage growth to keep your marriage in check while growing towards God spiritually, nothing will stop the two of you!

Always remember, marriage growth is intentional because a passive marriage will lead to a dead marriage!

I am co-founder of Inspired Marriage. I went through 19 years of addictions until God healed me Dec 26th, 2007. The first 5 years of our marriage was hell because of my addictions. With Sandy's patience, I was able to allow God to work in me and we have been growing spiritually together ever since! Oct 5th, 2023 was 21 years of marriage and it's been an inspired one!
